10 Important IELTS Reading Tips

Every candidate or student feels  that the Reading test  of IELTS  is so hard and they do not have much more time to answer for many available in test . You should have a strong planning and strategy to achieve  7 or more than 7 Band Score in reading skill  and to tackle it. In this article we are going to tell you about 10 importnat tips :

1. You should read a lot of academic texts

You should evolve a habit of reading in free time! . we must tell you that the texts in ILELTS exam  are “general academic texts”. This indicates that all are fetched  from different sources such as magazines , textbooks etc. If you are  not familiar with reading such kind of texts then you shoul start reading them, it will help you becoming familiar  with the words and language. And all these words or texts could be part of your test. National Geographic, the New Scientist and the Economist are three typical sources for ILETS reading texts.

2. Focus on text

Text are very important for you so your focus should be on the text first, then Question comes. Good understanding of the text can make you more comfortable in  answering  the questions more effectively.

 

3. Be able to Categorize

IELTS exam writers select a range of specific type of texts. You need to learn to recognize the type of text you are reading. It will help you predict its structure and you will be able to understand it more quickly.

4. Skim ability

You should develop the ability to skim. Do you know the meaning of skimming ?? read quickly by skipping the unimportant words . Unimportant words such as  prepositions and ability to  ignore  the difficult words that you don’t want to understand. You need to do this to get a generic  idea about a text or a paragraph .

5. Quick Scanning

You must know how to scan. Scanning is like a activity that we do when searching price on advertisement and look for a contact number in diary. you do not need to read the whole text while scanning , but move your eyes quickly over the text from one end to another end. You can start it from any location like from left to right or from  top to bottom. You need to  do this to find out the exact  location of answers in the large texts.

6. Paragraph structure

Paragraph structure is incredibly vital in reading test. You should  learn to recognize  paragraph structure. This involves recognizing the connection between main ideas and supporting ideas during a paragraph.Sometimes paragraph start with main idea somewhere near the start and develop from there. however the main idea is found to be located towards the end.

7. Overview

Try to get the overview of a text before beginning with the questions. You can do this by reading the title and the subtitle and you focus on the beginnings and ends of paragraphs at the same time .

8. Find  Similar phrases

Try to  spot similar phrases. You can  test your ability to match up a parallel phrase in the given  task with its equivalent in the text.

9. Do not panic

Do not panic when you see  an unknown or difficult word in texts. You are highly advised to read relevant texts before and to prepare.You can skip over difficult words which you think are unnecessary for your understanding of the text.

 

Learn time management

Time management is an ability for any exam. If you know how to manage time then you can cover more question in mimimal time in the exam. Most of the IELTS candidates complain about running out of time in the third reading section. Each text should be completed in 20 minutes. Do not spend too much time on a single question . you can skip that question and try to find the answer in the later if you have time. If you think time is running out then try to look for easy question .
